A Town the Railroad Put on the Map
Land deeds here go back to 1746, but the town itself came later. Around 1850 a rail company put a station between Emigsville, Liverpool, and New Holland. They first called it Mount Campbell. By the late 1850s it had been renamed for George H. Wolf, who ran the station, the post office, and a store all at once.
Lincoln’s funeral train rolled past that station on April 21, 1865 without stopping. In 1880 only 148 people lived here. The borough was not incorporated until August 23, 1910. Everything in this half square mile grew out of one set of tracks.

We back onto the tracks. Will the trains affect our system?
They can, and it is worth planning for from the start. Ground movement gradually loosens anything set in loose soil. Fixtures that were aimed perfectly in spring can be pointing at nothing by fall. Wire connections are the bigger issue, because a loose one fails intermittently and is miserable to trace.
On trackside lots we use longer stakes with wider bases and set them in properly compacted footing. Every connection gets a waterproof crimped fitting rather than a twist cap.
