When This Was Liverpool
People settled here in 1814 and called the place Liverpool. It kept that name for decades before becoming Manchester, after the township around it. Thomas Cookson had laid out that township back in 1742, when York County was still part of Lancaster County. Three hundred people lived in the whole of it.
The village had one memorable brush with the Civil War. During the Gettysburg campaign, the 17th Virginia Cavalry rode in and raided the merchants here. The borough was incorporated a few years later, in 1869. The old name has stuck around in local memory ever since.

Our roof overhang is deep. Will the upper wall stay dark?
Only if the fixtures sit in the wrong place. A ground uplight tucked against the foundation aims straight into the soffit. The beam stops at the overhang and the wall above never sees it.
There are two ways around that. We can move the source out past the drip line. The beam then clears the eave and carries up the wall. Or we go the opposite direction and put downlights into the soffit, working from above. Which one suits depends on the bed and how far the roof projects.
Can you light our screened porch?
Yes, but from the inside. Light thrown at screen from the yard scatters across the mesh. The whole panel turns into a glowing sheet.
Small shielded fixtures under the rail or overhead keep the space comfortable without lighting up the screen itself. It also cuts down on insects gathering on the outside. Anything we place in the yard gets aimed clear of the mesh.
How do you light a hedge?
Along it rather than into it. A hedge has depth, so a beam pointed head on sinks in and vanishes. Fixtures set close and angled down the length catch the face and give you a clear boundary line.
