This borough has been through three names. It was settled as Bridgeport in 1835, then again as Riverton in 1888. Only in May of 1905 did it take the name it carries now. Three identities inside seventy years is unusual for a place this size.

We have a view across the river. Will lighting ruin it?
It will if the fixtures sit in the wrong place. Your eyes adjust to whatever is brightest in front of you, and everything beyond that goes dark by comparison.
The answer is keeping every source out of the view corridor. Fixtures go behind where people sit and aim back at the house or down at the ground. Nothing points outward toward the horizon. Done that way you keep the yard usable and the city lights stay exactly where you want them.
Our front yard is a bank with steps. How does that work?
Not from the sidewalk, which is where most people put the fixtures. A beam thrown from down there lands on the face of the bank and stops.
We take the sources up onto the terrace, level with the foundation or higher. From there the light actually reaches the house. The bank and the steps then get their own low units. The climb reads clearly from the street below.
We are replacing our windows. Does that matter?
It can. New glass and coatings change how much warm light escapes onto the front bed at night. If a system was balanced around that glow, it will need a small adjustment afterward.
Our neighbor just put in bright white lights. Should we match them?
