Named for a Welsh Church, Not a Lame Peter
There is a story locally that this place was named for a tavern keeper called Lame Peter. It is a good story and it is completely made up. A schoolteacher named Ezra Lamborn invented it in a work of fiction, and people took it as fact.
The real answer is Wales. Welsh settlers named the township after Lampeter in Ceredigion, where the name means the Church of Peter. It was one of the original townships when Lancaster County was laid out in 1729. A brick tavern from around 1765 still stands at the square. By 1910 it served as the trolley stop.
